Used to prevent the spread of tooth decay or correct any cosmetic damage, a filling is just one of the ways we preserve your teeth. Before placement, any decay and stain must be removed. There are many types of filling materials: amalgam (otherwise known as silver fillings), composite resin which is tooth colored and can be customized to match your natural teeth, gold and varies other resins.

Amalgam

Made up of silver, copper, mercury, and tin, amalgam fillings were the most used material up until about the last 10-15 years. They last many years and are a great filling material.  Commonly used for fillings in posterior teeth, amalgam fillings can withstand biting pressure and can be placed in a single visit. Despite the very low remaining mercury content, these silver fillings are considered safe. Because of patient preference we rarely use this type of filling.

Composite Resin

Since the color of a composite resin filling can be customized, it is the most aesthetically pleasing option. With the advancements of design and materials it is the norm for most of the fillings placed today. Composite resins are ideal for repairing many types of missing tooth structure.
